K Desktop Environment was first developed in 1996. Matthias Ettrich decided to develop KDE because he had experienced the frustrations of using a Unix system as compared to other systems. He was driven to make Unix applications more straightforward and streamlined.

He decided to use the QT toolkit to design his project. KDE has been a group project with many different developers working on its development. By 1997 KDE applications were being developed and released.

Most of the developers of KDE are volunteers. Some companies, like Novell and Mandriva, though, have put their employees to work on the KDE projects.

Problems with KDE are handled through mailing lists where they are discussed and solved since there are so many people all over working on it at any given time. The core developers, though, make the key decisions about release dates and new applications that are to be included in the current version of KDE.

KDE is a ground breaking project that is likely to change how Unix is used. It has always been the hope of those working on the KDE project to get Unix to the same status as Microsoft and Macintosh desktop environment systems. With all the work and time spent on developing KDE it would not be surprising if soon that would become a reality.

KDE is short for K Desktop Environment. KDE is a Unix desktop environment that was designed to make up for the lack of easy to use Unix desktop workstations. It is similar to the desktops found on Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

Unix was the main focus because there was a lack of easy to use desktop workstations which makes Unix less popular then Windows or Macintosh. Unix, however, has been shown to be able to do more and be more reliable then those other more popular systems. It is through KDE that the hopes are to make Unix comparable and as popular as Windows or Macintosh.

K Desktop Environment is freeware which means it can be freely used and distributed. Systems running Unix can download the KDE program, install it on their computer and use it at no cost.

KDE aims to make the typical Unix operations easy to perform. It is the hope that KDE will eliminate the complex and often tedious challenge of Unix application development.

KDE will also be bringing an office suite to Unix users. The office suite will provide spreadsheet, presentation and word processing operations.
