K Desktop Environment is a kind of software project. The main aim of KDE is to provide an easy and friendly desktop environment for the users. The software provides the user with necessary desktop features and functions that can be used for meeting the requirement of daily tasks. Documentation and tools are also offered to the developers which contribute in writing stand-alone applications and this system acts as a shelter for various small projects too which are specifically based on the technologies of KDE like KDevelop, K3b, KOffice and Amarok.

K Desktop Environment has an office suite which is popularly known as ‘KOffice’. All the components of this system are released under the free licenses so that brilliant services can be provided to the users. In June 2007, 1.6.3 was introduced which is the latest and most updated version of the KOffice. This special system has been designed for meeting the requirements of UNIX operating systems. However, there are chances that there will be a Microsoft Windows version to cater to all the applications and not some specific ones. Open Document is used by KOffice applications in the form of native file format. The suite has been separately and exclusively released at the KOffice homepage so that it can be easily downloaded and the benefits can be enjoyed.

There are various components of this KOffice, such as KWord, KFormula, Kexi, KSpread, KPresenter, KPlato, Kivio, KChart, Krita and Karbon14. To know about all the components of KOffice, let’s have a look on what they are and what are functions.

1	KFormula: KOffice uses this formula editor for editing and creating mathematical formulas. This component is used so as to provide input facilities and contributes in proper functioning of a KOffice application.

2	Kexi: It is an application which is an integrated data management one. This KOffice tool performs the function of implementing and designing databases, processing, solving queries and inserting data. This component has the special feature of connecting to varied databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL.

3	KWord: It is the basic component which is a word processor. KWord’s text layout scheme is somewhat sim

KDE (K desktop environment) technology is a graphical user interface (GUI) which can be used on Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and UNIX systems. KDE has chosen to develop its platform upon the UNIX system so as to improve application integration. The UNIX systems had started of as character user interface (CUI). To enhance this user interface between the user and the software KDE chose the UNIX platform as it could express its desktop environment more dynamically through this system. Since its conception it has generated many applications for the desktop environment.

In 1996 Matthias Ettrich founded the KDE while he was still a student in Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. He was not satisfied with the desktop environment that was met on UNIX systems. He felt that there were certain features within the UNIX applications that were not well integrated. In order to rectify this problem he designed the KDE to suit to bring in a centralized application solution. Matthias proposed to construct KDE with the Qt toolkit which enabled him to design KDE as dynamic software.

So far there have been 11 major releases of KDE which include 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5. The KDE 4.0 is to be released in October 2007. But the KDE X.0 is of exceptional capability as it has it has binary and source compatibility. Through these major releases there have been changes in the program libraries of the KDE releases which have also improved as the newer versions of KDE have to offer greater user interface.

KDE has focused on providing users to expresses their applications needs uniformly whether that is on a UNIX or a Microsoft system. There have been many improvements upon KDE technology some of which include- improvement in API for portable and network devices which have been called Solid, creating a search frame work and a Meta data which is called Tenor, creating libraries that are adjustable for both Mac OS and Windows operating system. These are just some of the improvements that have occurred with the releases of the KDE version. But it’s interesting to see the different technologies that have been used to develop its architecture.

The architecture of KDE is based upon the platform of Trolltech’s Qt toolkit. The architecture has been designed to run on any Operating system so as to maintain uniformity across all platforms. Some of the base technologies used in the KDE architecture include- aRts- soundserver, KWin- a window manager application,

KHTML- the powerhouse of HTML, KParts- a graphical framework. There are plenty of other technologies used to construct the base architecture of KDE these are just some of them.

Thus KDE is a dynamic application environment that has enabled the integration of the desktop environment to the operating system. It has enhanced operability through many platforms and thus enjoys a wider popular appeal. KDE still continues to grow as a desktop environment with its web servers located in Germany and a panel of experts still dedicated to the innovation of KDE.

What are games? Basically games are for fun and enjoyment. Both children and adolescents play these games. Nowadays there are online games and with the help of Internet facility these games can be easily downloaded. People enjoy these games during their leisure time. Games play as an escape from reality at some time. This means when people are bucked up from their daily routines and try to escape from their work they start playing games so, they start finding out time for their enjoyment. At this time games play a vital role. The people who are aware of this facility of games online enjoy the advantages of games. The other people who do not have Internet facility are cut off from online games. So, they can play other instrument type games such as X-box or Television Video games.

KDE (K Desktop Environment) is software which is free of cost. Basically it aims as a powerful network system for easy using of desktop environment. The ambition of this project is to provide and facilitate the basic functions of desktop. It also provides the applications, tools and documents of daily routine
needs and requirements. These things help the developers to stand-alone and write their applications. The KDE project solves the purpose of stand-alone applications and small projects which are based on KDE technology. The small projects are K Office, Amarok, K3b and K develop.

KDE games constitute game packages, which are written for K Desktop environment. These packages are kdegames-board, kdegames, kdegames-arcade, kdegames-card and kdegames-tactic. There are varieties of games under each category. The first category kdegames include games kpatience, knetwalk and kmines. Kmines game is a computer game played by a single-player. The main motive of the game is to clear the mine area without knocking a mine.
The screen of the game comprises of squares made in rectangular field. In this game the square is cleared or uncovered when the player clicks on it. The square containing the mine if clicked by the player then the game gets over.
And if the square does not comprise of mine there are situations which may tend to happen such as the figure appears which indicates the amount of adjacent squares that contain mines. The second situation appears when the game clears adjacent squares to an empty box, and then the number automatically appears. A player wins the game when all the squares do not contain mine that need to be cleared. The time taken to clear the mines in squares is the score of the game.

Squares so cleared which themselves are empty (do not contain a number of adjacent mines) have their neighbors recursively cleared as well. The game is won when all squares that do not contain a mine are cleared; the score is the time taken to do so. The other games under different categories such as kdegames arcade are KBounce , KFoul Eggs and Kolf .

KDE games are really impressive and exciting to play. These games are fantastically constructed for the users to play. KDE has made best use of graphics to design screenshots and various links to play KDE games. The games are designed in a colorful manner in different shapes.

K Desktop Environment is constructed with Qt toolkit provided by Trolltech. It functions on both Unix-type structure and UNIX. It also works on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Qt 3.x version forms the basis of KDE 3 series. Similarly, more modernized version KDE 4 works on Qt 4.x. The applications of this version run efficiently on all the operating systems.

KDE or K Desktop Environment is a dominant software that is available for free. It is a graphical user interface for Unix and Linux systems. It enables up to date functioning and exceptional graphical patterns that are easy to work with. The functioning of K Development Environment for UNIX is parallel to the feature provided by Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

As a result of KDE software UNIX is the most open, scalable and stable system. It is the priority of information technology experts. No other system has been able to match the excellence and proficiency of the UNIX system.

With the implementation of UNIX/KDE and of UNIX like GNU/Linux, the K Desktop Environment is available free of cost. Anybody can view the source code, alter, learn and improvise on it. KDE provides a feasible and practical way to both commercial desktops and systems. It has provided the programmer with an adequate infrastructure so that users can create comprehensive and robust applications. These applications can be prepared in a proficient manner by minimizing the difficulty and complexity of UNIX system.

Some of the applications of KDE are Amarok (iPod, pod cast and Audio player), KNode (news client), Kate (text editor), KSpread (Spreadsheet) and Konsole (terminal emulator). These stable, open, monopoly free and reliable applications enable the computer experts and scientists around the world to work without any difficulty. Application structure of KDE provides the modernized version in technology framework. Its competitors are Microsoft’s COM/MFC and ActiveX technology. The high tech technology facilitates the developers to prepare applications rapidly.

KPresenter is a component of KDE application system. It has been used efficiently and successfully for numerous presentations around the globe.

Some of the basic expertise used in KDE 3 are KWin (window manager), KHTML ( HTML engine), aRts (soundserver) and KIO ( a feature that provides a controlled surrounding).
Since there is no general application framework, unified application or simplified dialog desktop, KDE provides standardized toolbars, menus and color schemes. It is available in over 50 languages.
The feature that KDE software consists of is KDE-Graphics (KPaint and KDVI), KDE-Multimedia (KSCD and KMidi), KDE-Utilities (KHexEdit and KEdit) and KDE-Games (KPat and KAsteroids).

Also, KDE has over 100 FTP mirrors across 40 nations. It was established in the year 1996 by Matthias Ettrich. There are two kinds of KDE versions-minor version and major version. However, the most awaited version is KDE 4. It will be released and available by the end of 2007. The mascot of KDE is dragon of green color. Most of the conferences of KDE are held in Germany. The software is funded by various universities, businesses like Dell and individuals.

A little about history and development of the KDE…

Software which facilitates comprehensible graphical desktop environment is known as K Desktop Environment or KDE. This software is free and facilitates primary desktop functions. All basic and necessary tools are provided to the developers for documentation. It supports many stand-alone applications. Many applications works on the principle of KDE like Amarok, KOffice, K3b and KDevelop. This graphical software is well known for its ease, modern functionality and stupendous graphics.

This software was by Matthias Ettrich in 1996. This software came into being because Matthias Ettrich was bothered by UNIX desktop. His primary foreboding was that the not an iota application of UNIX desktop was up to the mark. In order to overcome this hassle in his development, he proposed to develop software which would overcome all the limitations and ensure easy, and simple working. He not only decided to form few applications but the whole desktop environment. It provided a good working environment to the users which improved then work and made them feel good without fail. He wanted to develop desktop software which will be user friendly so that people with basic knowledge could make use of it. Before the KDE was initiated a Usenet was posted which incited interest in people. For people to have nice and beautiful free desktop environment this software came into being.

There are many applications like panel, file manager, east text editor, hyper text help system, games, image viewer, documentation and much more. Qt toolkit is used to make the application and finally this application was there in the market in 1997. Earlier this software was not free but in 1988 it became free under licenses GNU GPL and QPL. This desktop application is the best and caters the need of all types of professionals. KDE is convenient to be used by accounting professionals and even the scientists. This software is quite popular and is widely used by vast number of people. KDE enjoys the monopoly in the market and is the most reliable and steadfast.

KDE aids in making the fashionable desktop beautiful and attractive. With the use of KDE transparency of network is facilitated, and there is minimum need arrangement. One can have the feel of consistency with the use of KDE. As it widely used it, therefore, it exists in almost 50 languages. Standardized toolbars are available which makes the work interesting like color-scheme, menus, keybindings and toolbars. KDE technology makes use of avant-garde technology.

One of its important software is KOffice which is integrated software to meet out all the needs for hassle free working of the office. This software comprises word sheet, presentation manager, organizer, spread-sheet manager and much more. Also a powerful planning tool is available to make the tiresome work of planning and management namely KPlato. Kexi is one of the applications which facilitate easy and better management of the databases.

Hey,
If you are facing a problem with your desktop or fed up of your old desktop items, you can have the benefits of an easy and simple desktop environment. KDE is a software program that has been launched to meet the requirements of those who want to have a graphical environment that has an easy-to-use desktop. The KDE project aims to offer desktop features and functions so that the needs of the users can be easily catered. Moreover, various tools are also provided for the developers so that they can write applications which have the capacity of ‘stand alone’.

There are various applications that come under the shelter of KDE and based on KDE technologies. The list of these applications includes KDevelop, K3b, KOffice, Akregator and KMail. Now it is important to learn about the various KDE applications so as to work efficiently and conveniently. The following applications are the major ones that contribute in creating excellent opportunities for the users.

1	KMail: It is a KDE e-mail client application that helps in supporting the folders, viewing international sets and HTML mail and filtering. Moreover, it has the ability of sending mail through sendmail or SMTP.

2	Akregator: This application of KDE is an open source aggregator that performs the function of supporting Atom and RSS. The feeds that are present are stored in various categories so that this application can aggregate these feeds to put them in a single category. Like, if there are sports news, they can be put under the category of ‘News’ so that the users can easily locate the required category. This application can be attached for fetching the feeds and the users have the benefit of fetching the topics as individual feed or as a particular category.

3	Amarok: This free music player software of KDE is a popular one and is used for Linux and various varieties of UNIX. The components of the desktop environment are used by this software but it is released separately from other KDE softwares. Other than playing music files, Amarok also performs the function of library of music and arranging them into a folder so that the user can easily locate the category and play the music of their choice whenever needed or desired.

4	KDevelop: It is a free IDE. It has the license of GPL and it works for Linux and GNU. This application does not have the service to include a compiler. But KDevelop uses GNU Compiler Collection. The function of this application is to use a fixed text editor. This editor component is used through the technology of KPart.

5	KPresenter: It is a presentation program that is free and a part of the KOffice. It is a native format which is specially compressed with ZIP. The application has the ability to load the presentations from Magicpoint, Microsoft Power Point and OpenOffice.org.

Thus, the applications of KDE are an important part that serves the purpose of providing full satisfaction to the users so that they can have a user-friendly environment to work on their computers.

Hey, Unix users,

Have you got bored by looking at your slow, dull looking and boring desktop? Well then don’t fret as KDE offers you the solution for all your desktop problems. KDE primarily stands for K Desktop Environment and it is desktop software especially designed for UNIX workstations. Primarily the software is designed for the better performance and appearance of the desktop on your computer. KDE software provides you loads of desktop options like windows, images, wallpapers, icons and so on. KDE in fact is the sole foundation for many significant projects likes:

1	K office
2	K3b
3	Amarok
4	KDevelop

If you are looking for desktop environment software that is a perfect blend of stability and constancy packed with feasible features that is prone to changes then KDE is exactly the right choice for you as with KDE there is always scope for improvement. In a recent survey conducted by a company it has been successfully proved that UNIX is the most trusted software system across the globe that has delivered consistent performance in the last few years. Besides this it’s the indubitable choice of most of the working professionals and IT firms.

Furthermore, you can even download UNIX workstation from Internet and that too for free plus you will get an additional instruction manual so that you can learn about its amazing features. UNIX has indeed made its presence felt all over the world but still it is not used in that wide proportion as it was expected to be used. The main reason for this is that it is basically a bit complicated to use so still it hasn’t made its way into the households and offices.

But with the changing times KDE has appointed many professionals and programmers to develop applications out of UNIX that are vigorous and inclusive thus eradicating the intricacy and sophistication related to UNIX software system.

Like in Microsoft K Desktop Environment is also divided into innumerable KDE packaging. Names of few of them are:

1	ARts
2	Kdegames
3	Koffice
4	Kdepim
5	Kdeaccessibily
6	Kdemultimedia
7	Kdetoys

These are the primary software’s that are associated with KDE desktop workstations. Kdegames has in fact become a rage among kids. With games like KBounce, KTron, KWin4, KLines, Kolf the list is indeed endless has pepped up the energy levels in kids as well as adults. Another application is Koffice that is somewhat similar to Microsoft office. Koffice basically works under the license of open source that encompass several other components such as:

1	Kword
2	Kivio
3	Kexi
4	KSpread
5	KFormula
6	KPlato

Another important software application that includes personal information management is KDE PIM that has includes some other auxiliary parts:

1	KMail
2	KPilot
3	KNode
4	KJots
5	KOrganiser
6	KNotes

Lately the company started a new KDE project to accumulate fresh source codes for KDE. So if are looking forward to give your dull and dreary desktop an image makeover then there is no other better option available on the net than K Desktop Environment.

A little about basic KDE technology…

We are asked many time per day, “what is K Desktop Environment anyways and why everyone in the Unix world is talking about it”? Well, we prepared a simple overview of KDE for you that gives you a fair idea about this thing.

KDE or K Desktop Environment is a software system that aspires to become a potent system so as to provide a convenient desktop environment. The aim of the system is to facilitate fundamental desktop applications and functions for regular requirements. Also, it is provides documentation and tools so that the web developers can write down stand-alone claim for the computer system. There are numerous small ventures and standalone applications that make use of KDE technique. They are Amarok, KOffice, K3b and KDevelop.

KDE was set up just a decade ago in the year 1996. Established by Matthias Ettrich, he initially made use of Qt toolkit for the development of KDE project. He set up K Desktop Environment so that users could work, feel and look stable. The K does not carry any meaning and does not stand for any word.

KDE program features a mascot of dragon of green color. It is known by the name of Konqi. The dragon is visible in all the KDE applications and its screen.

Assembling of KDE program is a complicated task. Numerous organizations hire professionals to develop the project, such as, Trolltech, Novell and Mandriva. Mostly all the problems are discussed on various mailing lists. Significant decisions like addition of latest applications and dates release are prepared by core developers on KDE-core-devel index. Germany is the epicenter for the KDE development. Moreover, all its conferences are held in Germany.

New versions of KDE are released on regular basis. Two important kinds of release are minor version and major version. In the category of major version, there are 11 significant releases, such as 3.5, 1.0, 3.4, 1.1, 2.0, 3.3, 2.1, 3.0 and 2.2. By the end of 2007, KDE 4.0 will be released. It will work on the pattern and function of Qt 4x version. Another special release is KDE X.0 that enables to decode both source and binary-compatibility.

It implies that program that was developed to work for KDE 3.0 will function on the entire future KDE 3 versions. In contrast to major versions, minor ones do not add any significant features. The exception has been 3.5.x which had minor additions. Some of the versions of minor versions are KDE 1.1.1, enhancing usability and emphasis on rectifying minor errors and fixing bugs.

The main emphasis of KDE is to develop programs that can be used conveniently. Also, it ensures that while developing programs no other feature is sacrificed. Although the development of the KDE project is complicated, efforts are being made to reduce difficulty from 3.2 to 3.5 versions. Recognition of areas that are deficient in usability and rectifying them is the major aim of KDE 4.0. Features, such as modern window and font decorations, installing of security settings and addition of networked or local printer have been provided for a convenient desktop environment.

Some of the KDE applications are - Konsole (terminal emulator), K Word (word processor), Akregator (aggregator), Kate (text editor) and KMail (e-mail client). The project is sponsored by business houses, individuals and universities.

Another way to make KDE run better and faster is to run minimal applications at a time. Having too many applications take up the computers resources and can make KDE run slowly - just like any other desktop system.

Removing unneeded program from the auto start program will help to speed up the start up of KDE. Start up files can be deleted if not needed or moved to another file.

It can also help to stop K Desktop Environment system configuration. This runs on start up by default. It will run when the computer is turned on and it will slow down the computer’s functions.

It is also a good idea that users understand that K Desktop Environment is being developed by a group of volunteers. They do not have corporate resources, like other operating system developers. So, to expect the same performance is not reasonable. KDE users should be willing to accept KDE for what it is and respect the work that went into it. To expect too much is not ever going end with happy results.

When changing or turning things off it is smart to make sure that nothing is done that can not be undone. Create a backup or be ready to uninstall and reinstall KDE. As mentioned, making too many changes when you are not sure of what you are doing could greatly impact how KDE works. Be smart about it and you are sure to be able to find some ways to optimize
